 Stone Brewing vs Moeder Lambic
Tuesday, September 27, 2011

BelgianBrews -- "The Stone Brewing Co vs Moeder Lambic mini beer festival was held over the weekend on the 16th to the 18th of September 2011, in Brussels, Belgium. During this event, there were 30 Stone beers on tap, added to the 30 Belgian beers already available. This made the Moeder Lambic Fontainas, the bar with the most specialty crafted beers on tap in Europe. The list of beers were extensive, ranging from the normal offerings of Stone, in the US, to the more hard-to-find beers which were quite a treat! Accompanying his beers, Greg Koch, CEO of Stone Brewing Co (San Diego, California) gave two speeches at the event. The first one, on Friday, I was not prepared for and did not get to record, but by the second, I was ready and you can see the video below."

Stone to open a Brewery in Europe? on Vimeo
Tuesday, December 22, 2009

This is a very exciting project for Steve and me…and all of us at Stone Brewing. We’re going to be learning quite a bit with this endeavor, first and foremost: Will we be welcome? We’re approaching this with no assumptions other than we’d like to consider any and all options (other than having our beers contract brewed by another brewery, as that’s simply not our style). Many of the countries of Europe have great brewing traditions. Some countries are also currently experiencing a bit of a resurgence of small, independent (and independent thinking) breweries. As anyone knows that has visited the Stone Brewing Co. and our attached restaurant – the Stone World Bistro & Gardens – where we have more Guest taps than we do of Stone, we enjoy sharing the camaraderie of great craft beers. We look forward to joining in the fight in Europe by doing our part to add to the growing trend towards unique, flavorful artisanal beers, as opposed to the mass-blandification efforts characterized by megabrand sameness!

Monday, October 16, 2006

Seems like everybody's doing 'fresh hop' beers these days, but what about 'fresh pumpkining' a beer? GK and the brewing team here at Stone have been experimenting with the 'Pumpkinizer.' What the heck is a 'Pumpkinizer'? It's the process of using a pumpkin as a cask to pour beer from, and in GK's opinion it produces some REALLY good beer! But don't take our word for it, come and try it out for yourself! Its first appearance: Friday, Oct 27th in the Stone Store!

New Brewery Project Update...Volunteers Take Root at Stone
Wednesday, July 19, 2006

Stone needs volunteers! Not your typical volunteers though, we're talking about trees (pine trees to be exact). By volunteers we mean trees planted by nature, instead of ones which are cultivated in a nursery. We're looking for some 'little guys' to give variety to our already unique choice of greenery. So if you have a small pine tree or plant that is worthy enough to make it's new home at the Stone World Bistro and Gardens, bring it on by the brewery!

Then the answer came: An eBay charity auction will be conducted later this year in which you can bid on one of five spots to join Peter and GK for dinner and drinking of the beer.  Around the Brewery...The Society Of Barley Engineers
Wednesday, February 01, 2006

At the very core of the craft beer movement are homebrewers and their beers. These are beers made with no commercial intent. Instead, the homebrewers concentrate on making beers that they like...sometimes straightforward, sometimes outlandish, always interesting, and often incredible. The local homebrew club the Society of Barley Engineers has been using Stone Brewing as their monthly meeting place since before Steve and Greg even released their first Stone beer to the public in 1996. Now in the new brewery, the SBE gang wanted to show their appreciation for the years of hospitality by giving thanks with their beers to the Stone crew.

Out & About...A Vertical Tasting Of Stone Special Releases
Sunday, January 29, 2006

What a way to while away the time on a Sunday afternoon. Publican Tom invites Brewer Lee and GK...and some Stone fans...to join in a tasting of 25 Stone Special Releases from years past. GK and Lee get into some discussions of how best to age a beer and determine that when considering when to open an archive beer, there's no time like the present!

 Out & About...GK Talks Hairtalk
Thursday, December 15, 2005

Those that have been keeping up with Stone goings on over the past few years know that every two years Stone Brewing sponsors a hair dying event around the time of the Stone Anniversary. While enjoying a Stone Pale Ale and getting a long overdue cut, Greg talks with Shawna at The Loft about the plan for the Stone 10th Anniversary hair dying. The colors don't start running until Sept 2006, but it's not too early to make your plan to join in!

GK checks in with the crew as the packup begins!

 Out & About...An Escondido Tarantula
Saturday, December 10, 2005

Not typical vBlog material, but hey, I thought it was pretty cool when hiking the Escondido hills near the new brewery I came across a tarantula crossing the path. Native to the area, yet not all that commonly sighted, I decided to introduce the arachnid to the vBlog camera...and to you. -gk.

New Brewery Project Update...Placing The Restaurant Boulder
Thursday, December 08, 2005

GK and job Superintendent John Belcher ponder, discuss, negotiate, and decide on the proper placement of the Restaurant Boulder. It's a big 'un at around 16-18 tons! Ultimately, water will come out of it, spill down the sides to a small pond w/lil' fishies and the water'll flow out to the patio area. Bamboo will grow in a planter inside the restaurant next to the boulder. Very cool!

New Brewery Project Update...Signing Your Life Away

Around the Brewery...A Tasting Of Stone Vertical Epic Ales
Thursday, November 17, 2005

We've gotten a little behind on our promised posting of Tasting Notes for each of our Stone Special Releases every six months. So, to begin catching up, we scheduled a session with Bill, Arlan, Lee, Chris & GK and the Stone 04.04.04 Vertical Epic Ale and the Stone 05.05.05 Vertical Epic Ale. Conducted at the new brewery to help us get the "feel" for tasting beers there. We'll need to help all of you get a feel for it soon too, and there's no better way than to make sure that we're highly educated on the subject!

New Brewery Project update...A Check Into The Patio & Beer Garden Progress
Thursday, November 10, 2005

John called GK to drop by and give feedback (complete also with a flashback) on the reshaping of the future outdoor patio for the restaurant and the beer garden. GK also shows us the beer cooler and the beginnings of the draft system that will provide a selection of 32 beers on tap at the restaurant!

New Brewery Project Update...Building A New Stone Entrance Wall
Saturday, November 05, 2005

GK, Webmaster Mike, and friend Heather work on the entry pathway to the new Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. Taking experience from the Stone Wall Project, and sprinkling in some new ideas featuring boulders and curved thinking are certain to lead to an uncertain --- but very cool --- result.

 Around the Brewery...Halloween at Stone
Monday, October 31, 2005

Monday seems like an odd day for Halloween. Especially after seeing people dressed up out and about all weekend. Nonetheless, some members of the Stone Crew were up to the challenge... featuring Chris as the Human Flypaper, Webmaster Mike as the Bearded Girl Scout, GK as GK, Shawn as GK, Tom as a Mexican Wrestler, and Charlie as...huh?

New Brewery Project Update...Our Friends From BJ's Visit
Saturday, October 29, 2005

While on a retreat in San Diego, our friends from BJ's ask if they can come by for a looksee at our new place. "You bet!" was our answer. GK and Steve get a feeling of what it's like to show people around the new brewery. We can hardly wait to have YOU by next! (Soon, dammit, soon!)

New Brewery Project update...A New Fermenter Arrives
Wednesday, October 26, 2005

GK, Brewer Steve, Job Superintendent John, and Architect Andy are doing a walk-through of the building when Facilities Guru Bill calls and says "Look out the window...yonder 360bbl fermenter comes!" And he was right. GK checks out the craning and placing of the fermenter, and talks withBill, Brewer Lee and Facilities Guy Ken.

Out & About...The Tijuana Beer Festival Kicks Into Gear
Saturday, October 22, 2005

Saturday started off a bit slow and sleepy...but got kicked into gear in fine fashion and went until the wee hours. GK hangs out (and talks Mexican wrestling masks) with Stone Crew members Karen, Lauren, Paul, Ruben, and Debbie, checks out a wide variety of very cool music, discusses black metal, and enjoys the only Mexican brewed barley wine from Cucapá Brewing. A damn fine day.

Out & About...The Tijuana Beer Festival Kicks Off
Friday, October 21, 2005

This one is a bit long (hey, I got a beer fest to attend today...no time for the fine tune edits!), but fun. And a bit surreal. Oz and José from Cerveza Tijuana show Greg, Chris and Jake from Stone how to kick off a beer festival right! All enjoy a great Friday night event, and then the Stone guys head off to a midnight meal and a shocking time. Literally! GK & Jake take the heat all the way to 10.

Out & About...A Beer Festival In The Beautiful High Sierra
Saturday, October 15, 2005

GK joins David Hopwood of Stone, and Vinnie & Natalie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing at the Quincy Blues & Brews Festival. Beautiful mountain air, lots of great beers, a relaxed natural setting...and a good dose of downpour in the towards the beginning of the event that led to an afternoon of sunshine.

 Out & About...Wasting June Redux
Wednesday, October 12, 2005

GK meets up with Kris, Kevin & Ben to check out Tom Modifica's band Wasting June (when he's not fronting his band, Tom is part of the Bottling Team at Stone). An enjoyable evening ensues with conversations of the day's 3Litre Oaked Bastard Ale and Double Bastard Ale bottling, and discovering that Ben is "shocked" to find out that Tom and his band are quite talented.

Out & About...Promoting The TJ Beer Festival
Monday, October 10, 2005

GK meets José and Oz of TJ Brewing, and Gabriella of the Tijuana Convention and Visitors Bureau in Downtown San Diego for a press conference. Only Telemundo showed up...and they didn't even want to talk to ol' GK (probably too much trouble to have to put the translation text up, as his Spanish is none too good). So the next day Stone's own Chris Cochran takes the vBlog camera down to Tijuana for a press conference that is much better attended. Regardless of all the media, or sometimes lack thereof, it's going to be a great fest and the most important people know about it...YOU!

 Out & About...Celebrate The Craft
Sunday, October 09, 2005

GK attends a great "foodie" event on a gorgeous day in La Jolla. The afternoon is wiled away with talk and enjoyment of great food, and of course, great beer. We also see our friends the Scott and Laura Murray of Slow Food San Diego, Debbie of Stone, and we meet Sharon of Redwood Hill Farm (makers of some very tasty goat cheeses!).

Around the Brewery...GK and Bryon Judge The Stone 9th Anniversary Label Translation Entries
Thursday, October 06, 2005

In the August Stone Email Newsletter we challenged our masochistic Stone fans to translate the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale label that GK and Bryon had written using words submitted by members of the Stone Crew. It was tough, and neither the writers, nor the readers, got through unscathed. But what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger (as long as turning your brain to mush qualifies as "makes you stronger").

Out & About...GK Displays A Bad Attitude Over Getting A Silver Medal
Saturday, October 01, 2005

Stone Head Brewer Lee Chase gives GK a call to tell him that the Double Bastard Ale just won a Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival. GK's first reaction? Always one to look a gift horse in the mouth, GK thinks that the judges got it wrong, of course. Typical. At least he plays good host to wandering Stone fans Paul and Mark when they drop by the new facility. Witness as we discover that Paul has a dirty little fizzy yellow beer secret....

New Brewery Project Update...A Saturday Check On Progress
Saturday, October 01, 2005

GK finds a variety of things going on early Saturday morning at the new brewery. Tom and Kris work on Stone's panels, Bill Sherwood uses the mental carrot-dangling technique of future golf (let alone the promise of the first brew!) to keep him going during this time of intense work, Peter (Rolec) is working on the malt handling, and Keith (Coastal Electric) and Karl (Rolec) are installing the last sensor in the brewhouse. GK also introduces us to Scott Murray, who's our plant expert consultant, as well as being a local organic farmer.

Around the Brewery...Chris vBlogs Ben Brewing
Thursday, September 29, 2005

Chris borrowed GK's camera this afternoon to snap some pics of our Production Coordinator Ben doing a "brew along" shift with Stone Brewer Mike Howard (think an Air Traffic Controller having a guest stint in the Co-Pilot's seat). And while he was at it, Chris shot a guest vBlog. Short and sweet at 1:07...taking any notes GK?

 New Brewery Project Update...
Wednesday, September 28, 2005

GK takes the vblog around the new brewery to show us what can be expected by the visitor until the restaurant opens in early '06. We also meet Keith of Coastal Electric who gives us some info as to how all that stainless steel is going to be controled, told what to do, and shown who's daddy.

Out & About...GK Gets A Plaque On Behalf Of Stone Brewing
Wednesday, September 21, 2005

Once a year the San Diego Business Journal honors the 100 fastest growing companies in San Diego County. What does that have to do with beer? Not much, but GK heard they were going to be serving Stone Pale Ale at the event so he agreed to show up. What number did Stone make on the Top 100? Watch this vblog and find out....

New Brewery Project Update...Stone, The Metal Man pt.2
Wednesday, September 21, 2005

Stone shows GK the metal-art-meets-restroom-partitions work he's been doing. Extremely cool stuff. This guy's good. However, the vBlog camera sucks on this one as it doesn't ever quite focus....

Wednesday, September 21, 2005

GK talks a walk around the new brewery project, talks with Dan of WIT Coatings and checks out the staining of the concrete floors in the Gift Shop area, checks the stain samples out back, chats with John as he sets the level for a portion of sidewalk, and finds Chris who's just finished getting the last of the items from the Stone 9th Anniversary Celebration.

 Stone 9th Anniv. Celebration...Session B
Saturday, September 10, 2005

While Session A was a little more on the mellow side, Session B was a bit busier. We see more cool tattoos, converse with Arnie of Marin Brewing, hang with old friends, Dr. & Lisa White engage in some Toshi-talk, Cask Oaked Bastard is enjoyed, Cecil of Stone contemplates the cleanup, and we meet the Hardest Working Man in Show Biz...Vince Marsaglia, who, for six years running has been covering himself, and a LOT of onion rings, in Arrogant Bastard Ale batter for the benefit of fest-goers! Thanks Vince!

 Stone 9th Anniv. Celebration...Session A, pt.2
Saturday, September 10, 2005

Mike's Beer Cheese, the TJ Beer Fest booth, awarding of the Most Arrogant Bar in the USA plaque, and talking with Paul of Stone and Karl of ROLEC.

 Stone 9th Anniv. Celebration...Session A, pt.1
Saturday, September 10, 2005

A good time was had by all. Session A had about 2000+ in attendance and was nice and relaxed...Looks like our prediction that we were going to sell out was not accurate, but that didn't hamper anyone's good time!

 Stone 9th Anniv. Celebration...Set Up & Preparation
Thursday, September 08, 2005

We started planning this year's event just after last year's.  New Brewery Project update...Placing The Outdoor Bar Area Boulder
Friday, August 12, 2005

A few months ago, Greg found a very cool boulder that looked like it would be great sitting in the outdoor bar area. Fast forward a few months...job Superintendent John gives Greg a call and says "Hey, we're going to crane that boulder into place in a few minutes. Want to come over to the site and show us how you wanted oriented?" This vBlog includes a few moments of guest camera/commentary by John when one of the panels is lifted.

Around the Brewery...Steve & Greg Answer A Question
Wednesday, August 10, 2005

Mike R. writes in and submits a question asking for "advice, pitfalls, words of wisdom" on starting a brewery from Steve and Greg. Shot in the part of the new brewery that will eventually become the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, Steve and Greg answer.

Out & About...GK Talks Yeast with The Good Doctor At The Mammoth Beer Festival
Saturday, August 06, 2005

Does the subject of brewers yeast fascinate you? Me neither. GK first checks in with Stone guy Brian...but then you have to try and stay awake during GK's vBlog with Dr. Chris White of White Labs as they discuss all things Stone yeast...in a merciful 2:33. To sum it up: Fascinating. No, really.

Out & About...GK Searches For A Copy Of USA Today
Friday, August 05, 2005

On his way to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest for a 24hour decompress before hitting the Mammoth Beer Festival, GK gets the word that Stone is talked about in that day's USA Today...so a search begins in Small Town America (aka Bishop, CA) for a copy to check out the article. (After the vBlog was shot, GK put in another 75¢ for the 2nd copy. No, really. Honest.)

New Brewery Project update...The Brewhouse Takes Shape

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

GK enjoys a snifter of Stone Imperial Russian Stout in Mission Beach before Arlan & Chris join him to set out to see Stone Brewing's Tom Modifica's band Wasting June play at a well-known Mission Beach club. Unfortunately a missing soundman throws a wrench in the musical gears. Fortunately, Lee, Ben & Kris went also, so there were plenty (as if it takes more than one) of us to head off to another Mission Beach establishment famous for a great beer selection to have a few pints.

New Brewery Project Update...German Tanks Coming Up The Road!
Monday, July 25, 2005

These particular German tanks are our new brewing vessels of course! GK arrives just in time to see the first of the vessels coming in on the Wide Load trucks. This vBlog is nearly eight minutes, so you super short attention span types might want to sit this one out (if you've even read this far). This vBlog features Peter & Karl from ROLEC (our German tank-makin' friends), and Bill, Sean, Cecil, Bryon & Lee of Stone.

New Brewery Project update...The Beginnings Of A Brewhouse

Around the Brewery...Success! Stone Imperial Russian Stout Wins The Right To Use Its Rightful Name.
Friday, July 15, 2005

Quicker than we expected...by far...Chris gets a letter from our federal gummit letting us know that in response to our petition (as described in the June 17 vBlog below), they have changed labeling laws and will now and forevermore allow us to name Stone Imperial Russian Stout with its correct name! Thanks to the TTB for considering, and approving, our petition.

New Brewery Project Update...Big Check Photos at the Stone Wall
Thursday, July 14, 2005

We were able to raise nearly $70,000 from the "Stone Wall Project"! So, we asked the Mayor of Escondido and representatives of the charities --- the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos, the Palomar Family YMCA, the Escondido Sunrise Rotary, and the CSUSM School of Business --- to come out and pose for some "Big Check Photos" to commemorate the accomplishment. Afterwards, Steve, Arlan, Chris & GK take a look at the office area to check the progress.

New Brewery Project Update...Stone Wall --> Water Wall Test
Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Inspired by a stone wall that he saw in Napa in the rain a couple months ago, GK had the gall to rethink the whole Stone Wall Project by saying "what if we could make it so it's got water running down it...all the time?" Indeed. Well, to that end, a test was conducted to see what the result might be. In a word: Spectacular. Check it out as the Stone Wall Project takes on a previously unanticipated dimension.

New Brewery Project Update...View From The Restaurant Mezzanine/Deck
Thursday, July 07, 2005

New Brewery Project Update...Late June Progress
Thursday, June 30, 2005

GK and Brewmaster Steve take a look at the new coldbox on the 24th. GK and job Superintendent John Belcher walk the site on the 30th and take a look at the current works in progress. Hard to imagine we're scheduled to move into the offices in less than two months!

 Out & About...A Visit To Jason's Place
Thursday, June 23, 2005

GK drops by former-Stone-guy-now-turned-publican Jason's place with Cousin Dennis, Maureen & Stone guy Steve H. for a pint as Greg geeks out over the scenery. (And some mighty fine scenery there is!)

 Out & About...Supporting The Community
Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Where does all the money we raise from efforts such as the Stone Wall Project, the Anniversary Open Houses, etc. go? To important charities of course! And what do they do with the money? Greg & Stone Brewmaster Steve Wagner investigate by checking out the ribbon cutting of the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos' new Teen Center. Ria insists on giving GK a hard time for no specific reason (as if she needs one), and B&G Club CEO Shelly gives props!

Out & About...Homebrew Judging At The San Diego Fair

This week's installment of the New Brewery Project Update finds GK walking around the facility pointing out various feature highpoints.

Out & About...Stone Family BBQ & Picnic -- Big Competition @ the 'Shoe Pits
Sunday, June 12, 2005

Hangin' out and throwin' the horseshoes was one the lazy afternoon activities at the picnic. Good natured competition...certainly not as much as fierce as the water balloon toss...was the result. Good times.

Out & About...Stone Family BBQ & Picnic -- The Water Balloon Toss Competition
Sunday, June 12, 2005

Things really heated up this year with the water balloon toss. Last year Brian Skiles and Mike Lopez won the contest, but this year the combo of GK and Michael Saklad took the honors. GK didn't have the opportunity to fully train guest cameraman Marty on the vBlog camera, so some key action got missed...but he did accidentally catch the post-competition out-of-the-crowd water balloon attack on GK from Lee's wife Jennifer and the resulting taunts from GK of "sore looser" and "you're mine!" in return. Expect the heat to be turned up even hotter next year!

Out & About...Stone Family BBQ & Picnic -- Random Conversations
Sunday, June 12, 2005

We have a pretty cool, kickback & diverse crew at Stone Brewing. GK found some time to shoot a couple of vBlogs during the afternoon, but also (fortunately) took the time to do a lot of hanging out off-camera. Picnic highlights included a lot of amazing food from BBQ'ers Mike Palmer, Bill Sherwood, and many others...and a very tasty "Belgian Pale Ale" homebrew from John Egan and Luke Kristensen. Damn that was tasty!

Out & About...At The San Diego Real Ale Festival

Around the Brewery...Stone 05.05.05 Vertical Epic Ale--Why So Little Made?
Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Greg, Arlan, Ben & Chris answer a question emailed in from Joey D. in which he asks why the Stone 05.05.05 Vertical Epic is so scarce. Also, we missed answering part of his question on the vBlog about whether or not more was yet to be released. That answer is yes...for the same reasons mentioned in the vBlog: production constraints! In order to make as much as we did (which wasn't enough!), we had to fit in the brewing of the batches here and there and wherever (and whenever) we could...thus, some batches got brewed a little later than others. The last of it is currently at our brewery bottle conditioning and will get out the door in the next two weeks. Thanks for the question Joey!
