Stone Brewing's 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions

CURRENT TOTAL RAISED: $25,799

Ten years of brewing great beer has allowed us to save up lots and lots of cool Stone memorabilia. So, in true Stone fashion we have come up with another fantastic fundraiser to celebrate 10 Years of the Stone Brewing Co.

“Stone’s 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions” will be taking place each and every month on eBay. We’ve opened the archives, cleaned out closets, and raided GK’s office to dig up some serious items that we’ll sell to raise money for charity. Everything will have to do with the history of Stone: a comprehensive bottle collection, crown sets, glassware collections, tap handle collections, VIP dinners at the new brewery, and more!

100% of the proceeds go to charity, so bid early and bid often!

Write Your Own Arrogant Bastard Ale Bottle!!!

Seats One & Two

Rady'sIn the past eleven months of "Stone Brewing's 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions" we've raised over $24,000 for charity, and being December, this is the twelfth (and final!) monthly installment... 100% of proceeds from these auctions will benefit charity, so bid early and bid often!

Here at Stone we often get posed the question, "what happened to your old brewery in San Marcos?" from those who don't know that our friends at the Port Brewing Company took over the brewery in early 2006. We couldn't be happier than to see the place that served us so well continue to turn out stellar beers. Of course, credit must be given to Tomme Arthur who now masterfully brews his creations on at our old stomping grounds on Mata Way. With the extra elbow room he gained, he's begun a new series that he refers to as The Lost Abbey. To quote their website...

"Rooted in the Monastic and artistic Belgian brewing traditions, The Lost Abbey brewery project is the brainchild of Vince and Gina Marsaglia, former head brewer of Pizza Port in Solana Beach Tomme Arthur and Jim Comstock of Comstock and Associates who formed the partnership responsible for the stewardship of these beers."

The series includes Avant Garde, Lost and Found Abbey Ale, Red Barn Ale and Judgment Day. On Monday, January 22nd we will be having a special Lost Abbey Beer Dinner at the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. There will be five courses, with all four beers from the Lost Abbey series and, according to Tomme, "dig something [else] out of one of our barrels that we like and roll it out for the dinner."  Tomme can be a bit modest, so let us translate - he'll be bringing one his sought after barrel aged beers that’s bound to knock your socks off.

So, on to this auction... This month we are auctioning off three pairs of seats (that’s six total, for the mathematically challenged) to sit at the Brewmaster's Table with Tomme Arthur. An honor of course, but Tomme will be ‘sweetening the deal’ by bringing along selections from his ten year archive of beer has brewed over the past ten years with Port Brewing! He hasn't been more specific, but you can figure that he'll make it worth your while for sure (understatement). We will be selling tickets to the public for the Lost Abbey Beer Dinner @ the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, but only the six people from these three auctions will sit at the Brewmaster's Table and be privileged enough to share the special beers from Tomme's cellar!

Back in April our good friend Peter Zien, the owner of AleSmith Brewing was visiting and he and Greg got to talking about the very first bottle --- Bottle #001 to be exact --- of Barrel Aged 2002 AleSmith Speedway Stout that he had give to Greg as a special gift a while back. They had the idea to auction off a chance to share it, along with some other great AleSmith beers for a special beer dinner at the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. We will be selling tickets to the public for the AleSmith Beer Dinner, but only the six people from these three auctions will sit at the Brewmaster's Table and be privileged enough to sample what Peter himself termed "the rarest of the rare from the AleSmith Barrel Aged Series."

Write Your Own Arrogant Bastard Ale Bottle!!!

Write Your Own Bottle of Arrogant Bastard Ale.

Do It For Humanity's Sake. Or Your Own...You Arrogant Bastard! (Humanity Will Still Benefit)

In the past nine months of "Stone Brewing's 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions" we've raised over $22,000 for charity, and being October, this is the ninth monthly installment... 100% of proceeds from this auction will benefit the charity San Pasqual Academy, so bid early and bid often!

This month we have an unprecedented opportunity that we're auctioning off: You getting to write your own Arrogant Bastard Ale bottle!

This is a "once-in-a-lifetime-don't-expect-you'll-get-it-again" chance for you to express your arrogance on a bottle of Arrogant Bastard Ale. Try not to screw it up by not bidding enough.

We'll be taking your writings (either handwritten or submitted as text ˆ your call) and producing at least 60 cases (720 bottles) of your text. Of those 720 bottles, you will personally get 4 cases (48 bottles) and the remainder will be distributed out into the marketplace in your region of the country. We will not ship beer to your door, but we will work with your closest wholesaler (check the USA Distribution portion of our website) to get the beer to you. (If you wish to pickup the cases here at the brewery, that works too.) Clearly, there's going to be some guidelines to this. The bottle will need to meet California ABC guidelines, and if we need to ship it out of state it will also need to meet Federal (TTB) guidelines and any other guidelines required by your state. We will make sure it meets with the required governmental approvals. This means that you can't write any boneheaded thing you want, but a fully Arrogant approach will work! It does for us. You can download this PDF (144kb) to aid you in your creative process...

Write Your Own Arrogant Bastard Ale Bottle!!!

A FEW GROUND RULES:

Have Fun!: We're excited to see what you come up with and work with you to make sure your label is a unique masterpiece. This is your chance to share your views with the world and the enlightenment that is the Arrogance.

Nothing Inflammatory:
Yes, we know - the beer itself is a shot across the bow at the fizzy yellow stuff. Still, no writing cruel or mean spirited things. If you're wanting to do that, you're missing the point.

No Advertising: It's a case by case basis. If you want to put the name of your favorite bar as part of a story, we'll see if we can roll with that. If you want to put the name, phone number and slogan for your used car dealership - you'll be outta luck.

No Talking About Getting Drunk: It's federal guidelines. We cannot have anything about getting drunk, faded, altered, etc from alcohol on the label. Even the word "strong" is a no no. We're giving you perhaps too much insight into our label writing, but analyze the Arrogant Bastard Ale bottle... we carefully word the emotions behind drinking the arrogance. We all know it's the beer that falls under the category "American Strong Ale." Still, brewing beer in this country is a privilege (understatement of the year) and as such, we play by the rules.

No Profanity: Duh. You can express yourself better than that, just as we can.

All Legal Statements Are Off Limits: Brewed and Bottled by, Alcohol rating, Volume statements, Government Warning, Redemption Values and such are all off limits. You don't get a vote on that.

Redrawing The Logo: Wow, you really are arrogant to consider it. If you can convince us you can do better or can do it in a really cool way, we'd love to see it. You've got a tough crowd, so make sure you got the skills to back it up. The label will be done in red and white ink only.

Have questions? Email Chris.

Ten Years of Stone Anniversary Ale Bottles!

Children's HospitalIn the past eight months of "Stone Brewing’s 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions" we've raised over $21,000 for charity, and being September, this is the ninth monthly installment... 100% of proceeds from this auction will benefit the charity Rady’s Children’s Hospital, so bid early and bid often!

Ten years of Stone Brewing Co. means ten years of Stone Anniversaries. Something that is synonymous with our anniversaries is our Stone Anniversary Ale. Originally it started as an IPA that was a tribute to one of our favorite things... HOPS! It began with our Stone 2nd anniversary IPA and grew consecutively up to our monstrous 8.5% Stone 5th Anniversary IPA (which we made a 3 litre bottle of). From there we made amped up versions our Stone Smoked Porter (Stone 6th Anniversary Porter) and our Stone Pale Ale (Stone 7th Anniversary Ale). Then we brewed Stone 8th Anniversary Ale and Stone 9th Anniversary Ale taking inspiration from some of our obscure beers from long ago (Lee's Mild and the Heat Seeking Wheat). Where did we go from there? Where else? Back to our first love - IPA! Not only did we go overboard with a huge 10% Stone 10th Anniversary IPA, but we went way overboard with 10 different 22oz bottles and a 3 litre. Why? It went like this...

WHY TEN DIFFERENT STONE 10TH IPA BOTTLES?
It's no secret that our CEO, Greg Koch, writes our labels - and he had a hard time trying to fit a story on one bottle that would be a broad enough scope to cover our ten year history. In uncharacteristic fashion, Greg admitted that he couldn't tackle it alone. One perspective wasn't enough, so instead he came up with the idea to get ten perspectives! He gathered a list of the ten people who've been with Stone the longest, and each was given the task to write their own label. Each turned out better than we could have imagined, and we learned stories about each other in the process. We decided to print a quote from each on the 3 litre.

So there you have it, 20 bottles from our ten year history here.

A view from the back, and some fun facts about the bottles in this auction...
(from right to left)

-Stone 2nd Anniversary IPA 22oz Bottle (filled* and undrinkable)
The very first! The label states "This beer takes hops to the ridiculous" and pays homage to Vinnie Cilurzo's anniversary IPAs he brewed at Blind Pig and how they were an inspiration for our Stone 2nd Anniversary IPA. Of course our friend, Vinnie Cilurzo, is now happily brewing at Russian River Brewery.
-Stone 3rd Anniversary IPA 22oz Bottle
In the label, Greg says, "Hey Lee! Tell me something I can say about the 3rd Anniversary IPA." Lee replies, "Well, it was a bitch to brew." A good description for what happens when you promise people you're going to triple the hops the year before, and have to make good on it.
-Stone 4th Anniversary IPA 22oz Bottle
T.
-Stone 5th Anniversary IPA 22oz Bottle
Weighing in at 8.5% and a ludicrous amount of hops. The label lists everyone who worked at Stone at the time (wish we could fit everyone on there nowadays), the side reads "Brewed & Bottled by the hopheads at the Stone Brewing Co." and the ingredients read "Barley, Hops, Water, Yeast and a Disturbingly Cavalier Disregard for Common Sense!".
-Stone 5th Anniversary IPA 3 Litre Bottle (filled* and undrinkable)
A completely different label from the 22! It pays tribute to our five years in brewing and had quotes from the 2nd-5th Stone anniversary IPA bottles.
-Stone 6th Anniversary Porter 22oz Bottle
A sudden jump from our IPAs, the label explains our decision for changing the style. "An ode to density, viscosity, and the unbearable opaqueness of being..."
-Stone 7th Anniversary Ale 22oz Bottle
As if the vocabulary in the quote of the last bottle didn't get wordy enough, Greg came up with the idea for Team Stone to submit words for the back of the bottle. Online we have a record of who submitted which word.
-Stone 8th Anniversary Ale 22oz Bottle
Even more words! The bottle starts with "LOGOPHOBIC NIGHTMARES." From there we get floccinaucciniliphication, discombobulation, chutzpah and flapdoodle to name a few. Bust out your dicionary!
-Stone 9th Anniversary Ale 22oz Bottle
The onslaught continues, as the staff gave Greg a sadistic range of words to weave into something resembling a conscious stream.

Steve Wagner, Team Stone Since 10/1995

*FILLED BOTTLES WILL NOT BE SHIPPED WITHOUT BEING EMPTIED FIRST, READ BELOW FOR SPECIFICS

WE WILL NOT SHIP FULL BOTTLES OF BEER!
Unless you pickup the beer here at the brewery, we will empty all bottles before shipping them to you.

PLEASE NOTE:
For the 2nd Anniversary, and 5th Anniversary 3Litre, we should add a disclaimer that the contents are undrinkable. Something like “As eBay requires, we need to tell you that the contents are not what you are buying...you are buying the collectable bottle. However, we want to go further and tell you that if the beer inside the bottle was in drinkable condition, we would have opened it and enjoyed said beer before posting this auction on eBay. Trust us, the beer is NOT drinkable. DO NOT buy with the intention to open and drink. It won’t taste good. It was not properly stored. It won’t taste good. It was not properly stored. It will not taste good.”

A private dinner for eight at the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens with Stone Brewing co-founders Steve Wagner & Greg Koch. You and seven of your friends will enjoy a specially prepared Beer Dinner served with a rare selection of our beers and a course paired with every beer! To top off the evening you will get a private VIP tour of the brewery from the two guys who started it all...and of course will end up on one of Greg’s vBlogs!

A six course meal with these beers...

- 2003 Double Bastard Ale
- 2004 Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine

What? No Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale?

Dinner will be coordinated to fall on a date that works for both the winner along with Steve Wagner & Greg Koch - after the opening of the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. If winner is unable to attend the 02.02.07 tasting, they may choose to attend the 08.02.07 tasting instead.

StoneWall ProjectOver the past ten years we have designed and produced numerous types, styles, and varieties of Stone Brewing glassware. From pint glasses to tasting glasses to specialty glasses…we’ve done them all. A complete collection of these glasses is indeed rare, so rare that even Team Stone could not come up with a sample of EVERY single one! Nonetheless, we gathered up the most complete and comprehensive Stone Brewing glass collection we could compile, and they could all be yours if you are the winning bidder. 17 different pint glasses, 3 anniversary tasting glasses and 7 specialty glasses. Some gems of the collection include: the rare plastic Arrogant Bastard Ale pint glass (perfect for poolside), the even rarer Stone Brewing Co. pint glass in red, and the ultra-rare “sawtooth” version of the Arrogant Bastard Ale pint glass (sold only in 1996 --- we had the recipe, we had the name, but we didn't yet have the logo. The sawtooth design was made by our not yet famous CEO, Greg Koch). Not to mention some of the early Stone Anniversary pint glasses, tasting glasses, and a complete collection of the Stone Specialty Glasses! Proceeds from this auction will benefit the San Diego chapter of The Surfrider Foundation.

ABOUT STONE BREWING'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY CHARITY AUCTIONS:
Our auctions will be taking place each and every month on eBay this year.

ABOUT STONE:
Stone Brewing Co. opened doors on July 26th, 1996 in North San Diego County and quickly developed a reputation for big, bold, uncompromising interpretations of various beer styles. In our short but productive history, Stone Brewing has become one of the fastest growing breweries in the United States. With the unique approach of letting our beers speak for themselves, recognition from the brewing community was only a matter of time. As a result, the two largest beer enthusiast websites have rated Stone Brewing one of the highest rated breweries in the world, year after year.

ADDED MONDAY, MAY 29TH
A 10 Year History In Glassware!

“Our fans never cease to amaze us, and one such person is Tony Dean. Tony has been a fan of ours almost since the beginning of Stone –-- for almost nine years now. He has attended almost every Stone event and thus has quite an extensive collection of Stone glassware. When Tony heard that we were missing a couple of glasses for this month’s auction, he emailed us that he would promptly drive over and “donate to the cause” a couple of the glasses we were missing. In a few short words: Tony Dean Is Worthy!”

TUESDAY, MAY 30TH
TWO MORE GLASSES ADDED!
NOW HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY? BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE...

A 10 Year History In Glassware!

Stone Brewing Co. Plastic Pint Glass
Greg was also able to dig up one of these rarities, and this one even has Brewmaster Steve’s sharpie signature on the side from one of the infamous pool parties Greg was known to have thrown in the past!

Stone Brewing Co. 22oz. Pub Glass (1996)
Webmaster Mike found an extra one of these hard to find and unique glasses from our first year in his kitchen (among his other rare Stone glassware on the top shelf in the back where only he can see and reach) to contribute to the collection.

APRIL
$16,506 MORE RAISED FOR CHARITY!

StoneWall Project

STONEWALL STONES

In the first three months of "Stone Brewing’s 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions" we've raised $1955 for charity, this is the fourth monthly installment.

One year ago we held a charity event and established the StoneWall Project that raised over $70,000 for charity. Community minded beer enthusiasts bought stones, and we put them into the wall of our new restaurant (slated open in a few months). We've figured out which ones are still available and we're auctioning them off this month to raise more money for charity and to give people another chance to be involved and reap the benefits of doing so. What benefits? Gift certificates, discount cards, invites to attend a private party and most importantly... bottles of StoneWall Ale! What is StoneWall Ale? It's a beer we're coming out with June 11th that will only be available to StoneWall Participants (with a limited amount reserved at the brewery for our restaurant and other charity events). And besides rarity, it will be the strongest beer we ever brewed.

Lower down you'll see a table of exactly how many bottles of StoneWall Ale and what other benefits you get for which size stone. To view the different auctions for each size stone, go up to the link "view seller's other auctions" near the top of this page.

Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Escondido Sunrise Rotary Club, San Marcos Boys & Girls Club, Palomar Family YMCA and Cal State University San Marcos. Due to operation costs and to cover expenses, the first $200 of the winning bid from this auction will not be going to charity.

STONEWALL EBAY AUCTION F.A.Q.

Q. Why are you auctioning these Stones now?
A.
The opportunity arose that we could sell off remaining Stones to those who didn't participate last year. The point of this is to make money for charity and the 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions aligned as the perfect medium to do so.

Q.
Can I buy a stone outside of eBay?
A. We'll be happy to take your name and email/number and contact you Monday if there are any Stones left. If so, we'll sell you one for the minimum final bid paid for that size of stone.

Q. Can you ship the StoneWall Ale to me? I can't make it to the StoneWall Party!
A. Unfortunately no. We will hold on to it for you here at the brewery for up to one year. (continues below)

Q. Can a friend pick up my StoneWall Ale for me or attend the party in my place?
A. Most certainly! You can email or call us and we'll be sure we work out a way to verify that your friend is really your friend and release the beer to them.

Q. Are you going to auction more stones at another point?
A. We can't say. It is quite certain that we will not before the StoneWall Party, however if there any leftover on Monday - we will be willing to sell them at the minimum winning bid for that given size (see second question). If we do sell or auction stones again, it may be in a future fundraiser with entirely different benefits. It's hard to say for certain. Our top priority is to be fair to those who have already participated

(retail: $100) (in gold) New
• 3 litre 2006 Commemorative New Brewery growler
(retail: $150) (in gold) New

WHAT'S A GROWLER?

Wikipedia puts it quite well... "Growler is the term used for a half gallon, generally glass jug used to transport draft beer. They are commonly sold at microbreweries and brewpubs in America as a means to sell take-out versions of their product. Some brewpubs/ microbreweries also offer a one-liter version."

Things are going great with already raising $1270 for charity in the first two months, and here we go into the third monthly installment of "Stone Brewing’s 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions." This month we have an assortment of growlers from our history here at Stone. Ten to be exact (fitting for our ten year anniversary). A little of the future bled into this auction (hey, it's tomorrow's history) with some cool new growlers that are being introduced this week. You'll notice three of these growlers are printed in gold with an illustration of our new brewery. These are the commemorative growlers of our new brewery which have an added bonus to them... for the life of these growlers the glorious Stone beer you fill 'em up with will be $1 off each litre! All of the growlers in this auction can be filled at the brewery during regular growler fill hours with our lineup of year 'round draft beers, along with some great special releases from time to time.

100% of the proceeds from this auction will benefit the Escondido Sunrise Rotary Club. If you are a collector of Stone memorabilia, breweriana, or just want great conversation pieces (while supporting a Worthy cause) this auction is for you!

TAP HANDLES MADE FROM STONES?

If you've never seen one of our original stone tap handles, you're probably not alone. Back in the beginning Stone CEO, Greg Koch used to collect stones to be made into tap handles. We took them back to the brewery, drilled them, and sent them out to get engraved. Check out this picture from 1996 of our long time friend, Dave Park, walking back into the office with some freshly drilled stones (with mask and ear protectors to cope with the amount of dust and noise).

Here we are for the second installment of "Stone Brewing’s 10th Anniversary Charity Auctions." Last month was a great success, raising $760 for the Palomar Family YMCA! http://www.boysgirlsclubsm.org/This month we have 12 tap handles from our history here at Stone, which 100% of the proceeds from this auction will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos. Buyer's choice: If Winning Bidder chooses, additional signing of the 22oz Arrogant Bastard Ale bottles in the case can take place according to the Winning Bidder's direction.

Bottles can be signed and permanently etched into the glass. What is written, and who is requested to sign from the Stone Brewing Team, is up to the Winning Bidder.
